1. Actual cash value
Business & Finance · Insurance Abbreviations
Claim valuation method that pays the cost to replace damaged property minus depreciation for age and wear, so an older item or roof is worth much less than a new one. Some states define it differently, such as fair market value.
Example: My roof policy pays ACV, so the 15-year-old shingles were valued at a fraction of the new-roof price.
ACV coverage is cheaper than replacement cost coverage, and insurers increasingly apply it to older roofs in hail- and wind-prone states. For cars, ACV generally means market value just before the loss, which is what a total-loss settlement pays. In SaaS sales, ACV means annual contract value.
2. Annual contract value
Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations
Average yearly value of a customer contract, typically excluding one-time fees, used in software-as-a-service sales to compare deals of different lengths. A three-year contract worth $90,000 has an ACV of $30,000.
Example: Enterprise deals average $85K ACV, ten times our self-serve customers.
ACV guides decisions about sales models: low-ACV products are usually sold self-serve or by inside sales, while high-ACV deals justify field sales teams. In insurance, ACV means actual cash value.
3. Acyclovir
Medical · Drug Abbreviations
Antiviral drug for herpes simplex and varicella-zoster infections, given orally for cold sores, genital herpes and shingles and IV for herpes encephalitis. Valacyclovir is its better-absorbed oral prodrug.
Example: Empiric ACV 10 mg/kg IV q8h until HSV PCR results return.
High IV doses can crystallize in the kidneys, so patients are kept well hydrated and doses are adjusted for kidney function. Acyclovir, approved in 1982, was the first effective, selective antiviral drug; its developer Gertrude Elion shared the 1988 Nobel Prize. In respiratory care ACV means assist-control ventilation.
4. Amphibious Combat Vehicle
Military · Weapon and Military Equipment Abbreviations
Eight-wheeled armored amphibious vehicle built by BAE Systems for the Marine Corps to replace the AAV, carrying Marines from ship to shore and across land.
Example: Marines tested the ACV in heavy surf off Camp Pendleton.
The ACV is based on an Iveco design. Its early use was restricted after rough-water incidents in 2022, then resumed with new procedures. In other contexts, ACV also means air cushion vehicle (hovercraft).
