AD&D stands for Accidental death and dismemberment insurance, an insurance abbreviation.
Limited coverage that pays a benefit if the insured dies or loses a limb, eyesight, hearing or speech as a direct result of an accident. Deaths from illness and most natural causes are not covered.
Example: The employer offers free AD&D equal to one year's salary.
Usage notes
AD&D is often bundled with group life insurance or sold cheaply at work, but it is not a substitute for regular life insurance. Benefits for dismemberment are a percentage of the full amount according to a schedule. Exclusions commonly include drug overdoses and injuries from war or hazardous activities.
