1. Area of responsibility
Military · Military Term Abbreviations
Geographic region assigned to a combatant commander, such as US Central Command's area covering the Middle East, within which the commander plans and conducts military operations.
Example: The carrier moved into the CENTCOM AOR after transiting the Suez Canal.
The Unified Command Plan, approved by the president, defines combatant command AORs and is updated periodically. Smaller areas within an AOR are assigned as joint operations areas or areas of operations.
2. Agency of record
Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations
Advertising or media agency formally designated to manage a brand's main advertising or media buying, usually under a retainer contract, and authorized to negotiate with media on the client's behalf.
Example: After a review, the automaker named a new creative AOR for North America.
Many advertisers now use project-based work and agency rosters instead of a single AOR. Media AOR letters authorize agencies to buy on the client's behalf.
3. Attorney of record
Law & Legal · Legal Profession Abbreviations
Lawyer who has formally appeared for a party in a case and is responsible for it, receives all notices and filings, and usually needs court permission to withdraw. In the US Supreme Court, the counsel of record must be a member of the Court's bar.
Example: Service on the AOR is service on the party, so mail the motion to her lawyer, not to her.
Withdrawal usually requires a motion and may be denied if it would prejudice the client or delay trial. In Supreme Court practice, one lawyer is designated counsel of record on each brief. In India, Advocate-on-Record is a special designation for lawyers allowed to file cases in the Supreme Court.
4. Album-oriented rock
Arts & Entertainment · Music Abbreviations
US radio format, from the 1970s, that played album tracks by rock artists rather than only hit singles. The term later came to describe a polished, melodic rock style suited to that format.
Example: The local AOR station played the whole side of Led Zeppelin IV on Sunday nights.
In Europe AOR is often read as "adult-oriented rock", the smooth melodic style of bands such as Journey, Toto and Foreigner. Album-oriented stations evolved into today's classic rock and active rock formats.
