1. Assault Amphibious Vehicle

Military · Weapon and Military Equipment Abbreviations

Tracked amphibious armored vehicle, the AAV7, that carried Marines from ships to shore for decades. Its waterborne use ended after a 2020 accident off California killed eight Marines and a sailor.

Example: The AAV crawled up the beach and dropped its ramp.

The AAV entered service in the 1970s as the LVTP-7. The Amphibious Combat Vehicle is replacing it. The 2020 sinking near San Clemente Island led to investigations finding maintenance and training failures.

2. Average annual value

Sports · Ice Hockey Abbreviations

Total value of a contract divided by its number of years, used across sports to compare deals. In the NHL the AAV equals the cap hit that counts against the salary cap each season.

Example: He signed an eight-year extension with an AAV of $12.5 million.

Front-loading or back-loading salaries changes a player's actual pay each year but not the AAV. In MLB the luxury tax uses AAV, and in the NFL cap hits are calculated differently, with signing bonuses spread over the contract.
