1. Artificial intelligence

Technology & Computing · Artificial Intelligence Abbreviations

The field of computer science that builds systems able to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such as understanding language, recognizing images, making decisions and generating text or pictures. Today's most visible AI systems, including chatbots and image generators, are built with machine learning, especially deep neural networks.

Example: The bank says its new AI flags suspicious transfers within seconds and explains each alert to an analyst.

The term was coined by John McCarthy and colleagues in their 1955 proposal for the 1956 Dartmouth summer workshop, usually treated as the field's founding event. Progress has come in waves separated by "AI winters" of reduced funding in the 1970s and late 1980s. Marketing now applies "AI" to almost any automation, so terms such as machine learning or large language model are more precise. Pronounced as letters. In design software, AI is also the Adobe Illustrator file format.

2. Air India

Transportation & Travel · Airline Code Abbreviations

India's flag carrier, based in Delhi and Mumbai and a member of Star Alliance. The Tata Group, which founded the airline in 1932, bought it back from the government in 2022 and merged Vistara into it.

Example: AI 101 from Delhi to JFK is a Boeing 777 nonstop over the polar route.

ICAO code AIC; callsign "Air India." Founded by J. R. D. Tata as Tata Airlines and nationalized in 1953. In June 2025, Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787, crashed just after takeoff from Ahmedabad, killing all but one of those on board and many people on the ground. The letters AI more commonly mean artificial intelligence.

3. Adrenal insufficiency

Medical · Endocrinology & Diabetes Abbreviations

Inadequate production of cortisol, and sometimes aldosterone, by the adrenal glands. Primary AI (Addison's disease) results from adrenal damage, often autoimmune; secondary AI from pituitary disease or, very commonly, stopping long-term glucocorticoid therapy.

Example: Secondary AI after years of prednisone; hydrocortisone 15 mg/day with sick-day rules and emergency injection kit.

Adrenal crisis, with shock, vomiting and low sodium, is treated with 100 mg IV hydrocortisone immediately. Patients are taught to double or triple doses during illness and to wear medical identification. In cardiology AI means aortic insufficiency, and in everyday language artificial intelligence, so context is essential.

4. Anguilla

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

British Overseas Territory in the eastern Caribbean, capital The Valley, whose .ai domain became one of the most sought-after addresses on the internet during the artificial-intelligence boom. Domain fees now provide a large share of the territory's government revenue.

Example: The startup paid six figures for a short .ai domain, sending the money indirectly to Anguilla.

Anguilla has about 16,000 residents, so the domain windfall has had an outsized effect on its budget. The alpha-3 code is AIA. In everyday English AI almost always means artificial intelligence.

5. Aortic insufficiency

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Incompetence of the aortic valve leaflets that allows blood to flow back into the left ventricle with each diastole, the same lesion described as aortic regurgitation. The ventricle compensates by dilating, often for years without symptoms, before it begins to fail.

Example: Known moderate AI followed by yearly echo; LV end-systolic diameter now 52 mm, surgical consult placed.

Many cardiologists say "AI" at the bedside and write "AR" in formal echo reports; both are acceptable. The diastolic murmur is best heard with the patient sitting up, leaning forward and holding the breath after exhaling. AI is easily confused with artificial intelligence in general writing and with adrenal insufficiency in endocrinology.

6. Aromatase inhibitor

Medical · Drug Class Abbreviations

Hormonal breast cancer drugs, anastrozole, letrozole and exemestane, that block the enzyme converting androgens to estrogen in fat and other tissues. They are standard adjuvant therapy for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer after menopause, usually for 5 to 10 years.

Example: Adjuvant AI anastrozole 1 mg daily x 5 years; baseline DEXA and vitamin D.

Because the ovaries still make estrogen before menopause, AIs are used in premenopausal women only with ovarian suppression. Joint pain and stiffness are common reasons for stopping, and bone loss requires monitoring and often bisphosphonates. Letrozole is also used off-label to induce ovulation in polycystic ovary syndrome. AI has many other meanings, including artificial intelligence.

7. Adobe Illustrator Artwork

Technology & Computing · File Format Abbreviations

Native vector graphics file of Adobe Illustrator, widely used to deliver logos, icons and print artwork that must scale to any size. Files end in .ai.

Example: The printer needs the logo as an AI or EPS file, not a JPG.

Illustrator debuted in 1987. Since version 9 (2000), .ai files can embed a PDF-compatible copy, which lets many other programs open them and preview the artwork. Fully editable layers, artboards and effects require Illustrator itself; alternatives such as Affinity Designer and Inkscape import them with varying success. Outside file formats, AI almost always means artificial intelligence.

8. Additional insured

Business & Finance · Insurance Abbreviations

Person or organization added to someone else's liability policy by endorsement, gaining coverage for claims arising from the named insured's work, such as a property owner added to a contractor's policy.

Example: Name the landlord as AI on your liability policy before the lease starts.

Common ISO endorsements include CG 20 10 for ongoing operations and CG 20 37 for completed operations. Being listed as a certificate holder is not the same as AI status. Outside insurance, AI most often means artificial intelligence.
