1. Special Administrative Region

Government & Politics · World Government Abbreviations · also used in geography

Status given to Hong Kong and Macau, former British and Portuguese territories returned to China in 1997 and 1999, under which they keep separate legal, economic and political systems under the principle of "one country, two systems".

Example: Hong Kong SAR passports are issued by the territory's own immigration department.

Each SAR has a Basic Law serving as its constitution, with arrangements promised for 50 years. The 2020 National Security Law and 2021 electoral changes greatly reduced Hong Kong's political autonomy. In emergency services, SAR means search and rescue.

2. Search and rescue

Government & Politics · Emergency Services Abbreviations

Operations to locate and help people who are lost, injured or in distress, on land, at sea, in mountains or in disaster zones. SAR is carried out by coast guards, air forces, police and volunteer teams.

Example: Mountain SAR volunteers found the missing hiker after a two-day search.

In the US, land SAR is often the responsibility of county sheriffs supported by volunteer teams. The Coast Guard handles maritime SAR, and the Air Force coordinates inland SAR through the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Satellite beacons route distress alerts to SAR authorities.

3. Saudi riyal

Business & Finance · Currency Abbreviations

Saudi Arabia's currency, issued by the Saudi Central Bank, pegged to the US dollar at 3.75 riyals since 1986 and divided into 100 halalas.

Example: Umrah package price: SAR 4,500 per person, including hotel and transport.

The fixed peg means Saudi interest rates closely follow US Federal Reserve decisions. The central bank was known as SAMA, the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority, until it was renamed in 2020. Prices are written SR locally. The word riyal derives from the Spanish real.

4. Subacute rehabilitation

Medical · Rehabilitation Abbreviations

Rehabilitation provided in a skilled nursing facility for patients who need therapy after a hospital stay but cannot tolerate or do not qualify for intensive inpatient rehabilitation. Therapy is typically less than three hours a day.

Example: Recommend SAR at SNF; tolerates 45 min therapy sessions only.

Also called short-term rehab. Medicare covers subacute rehab under the SNF benefit after a qualifying inpatient stay. Discharge recommendations often compare SAR with IRF or home health based on endurance and goals.

5. Specific absorption rate

Technology & Computing · Telecom Abbreviations

Measure of how much radio-frequency energy the body absorbs from a device such as a mobile phone, expressed in watts per kilogram. Regulators set maximum SAR limits that phones must meet before sale.

Example: The phone's head SAR is 0.98 W/kg, below the US limit of 1.6.

The US FCC limit is 1.6 W/kg averaged over 1 gram of tissue, while the EU limit is 2.0 W/kg averaged over 10 grams. In 2023, France's frequency agency ANFR ordered Apple to halt iPhone 12 sales after tests found a limb SAR above the limit, and Apple released a software update in response. Phones usually list SAR values in their settings or documentation.

6. Suspicious activity report

Business & Finance · Banking Abbreviations

Confidential report that banks and other financial institutions file with authorities when they detect transactions that may involve money laundering, fraud, terrorist financing or other crimes. In the US, SARs go to FinCEN, generally within 30 days of initial detection.

Example: The compliance officer filed a SAR after the customer made a series of round-number wires to a shell company.

Banks may not tell customers that a SAR has been filed, a ban known as the prohibition on "tipping off." US institutions file millions of SARs each year. In the UK the equivalent report, also called a SAR, goes to the National Crime Agency. SAR also stands for Special Administrative Region, as in Hong Kong SAR.

7. Student Aid Report

Education & Academia · Academic Abbreviations

Summary of FAFSA information that the US Department of Education sent to students after processing, showing their eligibility index and any problems. Since the 2024–25 cycle it has been replaced by the FAFSA Submission Summary.

Example: Review your SAR carefully for errors before the college finalizes your aid.

The document duplicated the data sent to colleges in the ISIR. Older guides and many counselors still refer to the SAR. In other fields SAR means search and rescue or suspicious activity report.
