IRF stands for Inpatient rehabilitation facility, a hospital abbreviation.
Hospital or hospital unit providing intensive rehabilitation, generally at least three hours of therapy a day five days a week, for patients recovering from stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, amputation and similar conditions.
Example: Accepted to IRF after stroke; can tolerate 3 hours of therapy daily.
Usage notes
Medicare's "60 percent rule" requires that most patients have one of 13 listed conditions. A rehabilitation physician must see patients regularly. Patients who cannot tolerate intensive therapy are usually sent to a SNF instead. Outcomes are recorded on the IRF-PAI assessment.
