1. Shots on goal
Sports · Ice Hockey Abbreviations
Shots that would have entered the net if not stopped by the goaltender, plus goals. Shots that miss the net, hit the post or are blocked by skaters do not count.
Example: The Rangers outshot Boston 41-22 in SOG but lost 3-2.
Shot totals are compiled by off-ice officials and can vary between arenas. Shot attempts including misses and blocks are tracked as Corsi. In soccer, the equivalent stat is usually called shots on target (SOT).
2. Standard operating guideline
Government & Politics · Emergency Services Abbreviations
Written department procedure describing how firefighters or other responders should handle specific situations, such as high-rise fires, vehicle extrications or mayday calls. Many fire departments prefer "guideline" to "procedure" to allow judgment on scene.
Example: Per our SOG, the second-due engine establishes a water supply for the first-due.
SOGs are similar to standard operating procedures (SOPs), but the name signals flexibility. They are used in training and reviewed after incidents. In maritime navigation, SOG means speed over ground.
3. Speed over ground
Transportation & Travel · Maritime Abbreviations
Vessel's actual speed relative to the seabed, as measured by GPS, which differs from speed through the water because of currents and tides. SOG is shown on chartplotters and AIS data.
Example: We're making 6 knots through the water but only 4 knots SOG against the tide.
Speed through the water (STW) is measured by a log or paddlewheel sensor. Sailors time passages through tidal gates to gain favorable current. SOG is the figure shown on public ship-tracking websites.
