1. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh

Government & Politics · World Government Abbreviations

Hindu nationalist volunteer organization founded in 1925 in Nagpur, which runs daily local branches called shakhas and is the ideological parent of a network of groups including the BJP.

Example: Many senior BJP leaders began their careers as RSS volunteers.

The name means "National Volunteer Organisation". It was banned for a time after a former member assassinated Mahatma Gandhi in 1948, and again during the 1975-1977 Emergency. Supporters describe it as a cultural organization; critics see it as promoting a majoritarian agenda. In computing, RSS is a web feed format.

2. Really Simple Syndication

Technology & Computing · Internet & Web Abbreviations

An XML feed format that lets websites publish lists of their latest articles or episodes so readers and apps can collect updates automatically. Podcasts are distributed almost entirely through RSS feeds.

Example: Paste the show's RSS link into your podcast app to subscribe without an account.

Netscape released the first version in 1999 as RDF Site Summary; "Really Simple Syndication" is the expansion used for RSS 2.0, associated with Dave Winer. The 2013 shutdown of Google Reader reduced mainstream use, but feeds remain the backbone of podcasting and news aggregators. Atom is a similar format standardized by the IETF.

3. Residual sum of squares

Units & Measurements · Statistics Abbreviations

The sum of squared residuals, the differences between observed and fitted values in a regression. Lower RSS means a closer fit, and least squares chooses the line that minimizes it.

Example: The quadratic model cut the RSS by 35 percent compared with the linear fit.

RSS feeds into R², the F-test for nested models and information criteria such as AIC. Because it always falls when predictors are added, RSS alone cannot choose between models of different sizes. In computing, RSS is the Really Simple Syndication web-feed format.
