RCMP stands for Royal Canadian Mounted Police, a world government abbreviation.

Canada's national police force, which enforces federal laws nationwide and, under contract, serves as the provincial police in eight provinces and the three territories and as the local police in many municipalities. It is led by a Commissioner.

Example: RCMP officers closed the highway while they investigated the crash.

Usage notes

Founded in 1873 as the North-West Mounted Police to police the western territories, it took its current name in 1920. Officers are known as Mounties, and their red serge ceremonial uniform is a national symbol. Ontario and Quebec have their own provincial police forces, so the RCMP's role there is limited to federal policing.
