PSAP stands for Public safety answering point, an emergency services abbreviation also used in medicine.
Call center that answers 911 calls and dispatches or transfers them to police, fire or EMS. The US has several thousand PSAPs, ranging from small county centers to large city operations.
Example: Wireless calls near the county line sometimes reach the wrong PSAP and have to be transferred.
Usage notes
Pronounced "PEE-sap." Primary PSAPs receive calls directly, while secondary PSAPs receive transferred calls. The FCC maintains a registry of PSAPs. Staffing shortages among dispatchers are a widespread challenge.
