Vaccine protecting against four groups of Neisseria meningitidis bacteria, which cause meningitis and bloodstream infection. It is routinely given at 11–12 years with a booster at 16, and to people with certain medical conditions.
Example: MenACWY booster at 16-year visit; MenB discussed for college.
Usage notes
Adolescents and young adults, especially in dormitories, have higher rates of meningococcal disease, which can kill within hours. Some colleges require proof of vaccination. A combined pentavalent vaccine covering groups A, B, C, W and Y was approved in 2023. Older names include MCV4.
