CategoriesMedical

MAS stands for Meconium aspiration syndrome, a pediatric & neonatal abbreviation.

Breathing problem in newborns, usually at term or after, who inhale meconium-stained amniotic fluid before or during birth, causing airway blockage, inflammation and surfactant dysfunction. Severe cases can lead to persistent pulmonary hypertension.

Example: Thick meconium, nonvigorous at birth; MAS with patchy infiltrates, on CPAP 40 percent oxygen.

Usage notes

Meconium-stained fluid occurs in a minority of births, and only a small fraction of those infants develop MAS. Neonatal resuscitation guidelines stopped recommending routine tracheal suctioning of nonvigorous infants in 2015. Treatments include oxygen, ventilation, surfactant and, for severe cases, inhaled nitric oxide or ECMO.
