1. Low birth weight
Medical · Pediatric & Neonatal Abbreviations
Birth weight under 2,500 g (about 5 lb 8 oz), regardless of gestational age, as defined by the WHO. It results from prematurity, fetal growth restriction or both, and is a major predictor of newborn illness and death.
Example: LBW term infant, 2,280 g, SGA; glucose monitoring and feeding plan.
About 8 percent of US babies are born with LBW. Smoking, high blood pressure, multiple pregnancy and inadequate prenatal care are common contributors. Subcategories are very low birth weight (under 1,500 g) and extremely low birth weight (under 1,000 g).
2. Leg before wicket
Sports · Other Sports Abbreviations
Cricket dismissal in which the ball strikes the batter's body, usually the leg pad, when it would otherwise have hit the stumps, subject to rules about where it pitched and where it struck. One of the most frequent ways to be out.
Example: He was given out LBW playing no shot to a ball that straightened.
LBW decisions are among the most disputed in cricket, and ball-tracking technology used in the Decision Review System predicts whether the ball would have hit the wicket. The batter cannot be out LBW to a ball that pitched outside leg stump.
