MIS-C stands for Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, a pediatric & neonatal abbreviation.
Serious inflammatory condition that develops in some children two to six weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection, with fever, abdominal pain, rash, red eyes and involvement of the heart and other organs, sometimes with shock. Most children recover with treatment.
Example: MIS-C: fever 5 days, SARS-CoV-2 antibody positive, troponin elevated, EF 40 percent; IVIG and steroids.
Usage notes
The condition was first reported in spring 2020 in the UK and US, and the CDC published its case definition in May 2020. It shares features with Kawasaki disease but affects older children and causes more heart dysfunction and shock. Cases fell sharply after vaccines and the Omicron era. Adults can develop a similar syndrome (MIS-A).
