HSP stands for Henoch-Schönlein purpura, a pediatric & neonatal abbreviation.

The most common vasculitis of childhood, caused by IgA deposits in small blood vessels, producing raised purple spots (palpable purpura) on the legs and buttocks, joint pain, abdominal pain and sometimes kidney inflammation. It often follows an upper respiratory infection.

Example: HSP: palpable purpura on legs, knee arthralgia, normal platelets; UA weekly for hematuria.

Usage notes

The condition is now officially called IgA vasculitis. Most children recover within a month, but kidney involvement needs monitoring for six months or more. Intussusception is a rare abdominal complication. Platelet counts are normal, distinguishing it from conditions such as ITP.
