CategoriesMedical

MMRV stands for Measles, mumps, rubella and varicella vaccine, a pediatric & neonatal abbreviation.

Live combination vaccine adding chickenpox protection to MMR in a single shot, licensed in the US in 2005. It can be used for either of the two routine doses at 12–15 months and 4–6 years.

Example: Parent prefers separate shots for dose 1; MMRV planned for the 4-year dose.

Usage notes

Giving MMRV as the first dose at 12–23 months slightly raises the risk of fever-related seizures compared with separate MMR and varicella shots, so the CDC prefers separate vaccines for the first dose unless parents choose otherwise. The combined form is preferred for the second dose.
