IPV stands for Inactivated poliovirus vaccine, a pediatric & neonatal abbreviation.
Injected polio vaccine containing killed poliovirus, given in four doses at 2 months, 4 months, 6–18 months and 4–6 years. It is the only polio vaccine used in the US since 2000.
Example: IPV dose 3 given today with DTaP and hepatitis B.
Usage notes
Jonas Salk's inactivated vaccine was licensed in 1955. The US switched from Sabin's oral live vaccine (OPV) to IPV only because OPV could, very rarely, cause vaccine-associated paralysis. A paralytic case in an unvaccinated adult in New York in 2022, caused by vaccine-derived virus spread from abroad, underlined the importance of vaccination.
