1. Neonatal abstinence syndrome
Medical · Pediatric & Neonatal Abbreviations
Withdrawal syndrome in newborns exposed in the womb to opioids and sometimes other substances, causing irritability, high-pitched crying, tremors, poor feeding, sleep problems, vomiting and diarrhea. Symptoms usually begin within days of birth.
Example: NAS from maternal methadone; Eat, Sleep, Console assessment, rooming-in, no morphine needed.
The Finnegan scoring system, developed in 1975, was long used to guide treatment. The newer Eat, Sleep, Console approach emphasizes nonpharmacologic care such as rooming-in, skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding, and a 2023 trial showed it shortened hospital stays. In nursing diet orders NAS means no added salt.
2. Network-attached storage
Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations
Dedicated file-storage device connected to a network so that multiple computers, phones and TVs can share files, back up data and stream media. Home and small-business units from Synology, QNAP and others hold two to a dozen drives.
Example: All three laptops back up nightly to the NAS in the closet.
A NAS serves files using protocols such as SMB and NFS, unlike a storage area network, which provides block-level storage to servers. Most run a Linux-based operating system with apps for media servers such as Plex, photo libraries and cloud sync. Internet-exposed NAS devices have been hit by ransomware campaigns, so remote access should be set up carefully.
3. Lynden Pindling International Airport
Transportation & Travel · Airport Code Abbreviations
Busiest airport in the Bahamas, located on New Providence island about 16 kilometers west of downtown Nassau. US-bound passengers clear US customs and immigration before departure.
Example: With preclearance at NAS, we landed in Miami as a domestic arrival.
ICAO code MYNN. Renamed in 2006 for Sir Lynden Pindling, the first prime minister of the independent Bahamas. It is a hub for flights to the Out Islands. The code simply abbreviates Nassau.
4. No added salt
Medical · Nursing Abbreviations
Mild sodium-restricted diet in which no salt is added at the table and very salty foods are avoided, without strict gram limits. It is used for patients with hypertension, heart failure or fluid retention when a stricter restriction is not needed.
Example: Diet: NAS, 1.5 L fluid restriction, daily weights.
Less strict than a 2-gram sodium diet, which counts sodium in every food. Hospital trays labeled NAS simply omit salt packets. Patients often underestimate hidden sodium in bread, soups and processed meat, so discharge teaching focuses on label reading.
