EGP stands for Egyptian pound, a currency abbreviation.
Egypt's currency, issued by the Central Bank of Egypt and divided into 100 piastres. Locally it is called the geneih and written LE, from French livre egyptienne, or E£.
Example: A felucca ride on the Nile costs about EGP 300 per hour.
Usage notes
Egypt devalued the pound several times between 2016 and 2024, including a large float in March 2024 alongside an expanded IMF program. The LE abbreviation dates from the era when French was a language of commerce in Egypt. Polymer notes were introduced in 2022.
