DEM stands for Deutsche Mark, a currency abbreviation.

Germany's currency from 1948 until the euro replaced it, electronically in 1999 and as cash in 2002, at 1.95583 marks per euro. It became a symbol of postwar stability and was issued by the Bundesbank from 1957.

Example: The 1995 contract specifies a payment of DEM 50,000.

Usage notes

Introduced in the June 1948 currency reform in the Western occupation zones, the mark ended postwar black markets and grew into one of the world's strongest currencies. The Bundesbank still exchanges D-Mark notes and coins for euros with no time limit. Everyday German usage abbreviated it DM.
