HKD stands for Hong Kong dollar, a currency abbreviation.
Hong Kong's currency, pegged to the US dollar since 1983 and held within a band of 7.75 to 7.85 per dollar. Unusually, most banknotes are issued by three commercial banks: HSBC, Standard Chartered and Bank of China (Hong Kong).
Example: Lunch for two at the dim sum restaurant came to HKD 380.
Usage notes
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority defends the peg through a currency board system, and the current 7.75 to 7.85 band dates from 2005. The government itself issues the $10 note and all coins. The dollar is divided into 100 cents, and local prices are written HK$ or simply $.
