1. Cancer of unknown primary
Medical · Hematology and Oncology Abbreviations
Metastatic cancer for which a thorough evaluation cannot identify the organ where it began, accounting for an estimated 2 to 5 percent of cancers. Pathology and imaging aim to find the most likely origin to guide treatment.
Example: Liver and bone mets, adenocarcinoma on biopsy, CK7+/CK20-, no primary on PET-CT: CUP.
Immunohistochemistry staining patterns, gene expression profiling and next-generation sequencing help suggest a likely origin or identify targetable alterations. Some favorable subgroups, such as women with isolated axillary lymph node adenocarcinoma treated like breast cancer, have good outcomes. Many patients receive empiric platinum-based chemotherapy.
2. Cuban peso
Business & Finance · Currency Abbreviations
Cuba's main currency, issued by the Banco Central de Cuba. Since a 2021 monetary reform ended the dual-currency system, the CUP has been the only official peso, though US dollars and euros remain important in practice.
Example: Street food in Havana is priced in CUP, while some hotels charge in foreign currency.
From 1994 to 2021 Cuba also issued the convertible peso (CUC), pegged one-to-one to the US dollar and used by tourists and in the formal economy. Unification at an official rate of 24 CUP per dollar was followed by high inflation and a wide gap with informal rates. The code's resemblance to the word cup is coincidental.
