1. Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals

Science & Engineering · Chemistry Abbreviations

United Nations framework that standardizes how chemical hazards are classified and communicated on labels and safety data sheets. GHS labels carry red-diamond pictograms, a signal word ("Danger" or "Warning") and coded hazard and precautionary statements, so workers worldwide see consistent warnings.

Example: The GHS label shows the flame and exclamation-mark pictograms with the signal word Warning.

First adopted by the UN in 2003 and revised every two years, the GHS is implemented through national laws such as the EU's CLP Regulation and the US Hazard Communication Standard. Hazard statements are numbered H-codes (H225 means highly flammable liquid and vapor) and precautionary statements are P-codes. There are nine GHS pictograms.

2. Ghanaian cedi

Business & Finance · Currency Abbreviations

Ghana's currency, issued by the Bank of Ghana and divided into 100 pesewas. The current cedi dates from 2007, when 10,000 old cedis became one new cedi.

Example: The Accra taxi to the airport costs about GHS 80.

Cedi comes from the Akan word for cowrie shell, once used as money in the region. The currency lost much of its value in 2022 during a debt crisis that led to an IMF program. Prices are written GH₵.
