VoWiFi stands for Voice over Wi-Fi, a telecom abbreviation.
Technology, usually labeled "Wi-Fi calling" on phones, that routes ordinary phone calls and texts over a Wi-Fi internet connection to the carrier's network, improving coverage indoors where cellular signal is weak.
Example: The basement has no signal, but calls work because the phone uses VoWiFi.
Usage notes
VoWiFi uses the same IP Multimedia Subsystem as VoLTE and connects to the carrier through an encrypted tunnel, so calls use the normal phone number and dialer. Calls can hand over to LTE when leaving Wi-Fi range. Carriers require an emergency address so that 911 or 112 calls over Wi-Fi can be located. It differs from app-based calling such as WhatsApp.
