Wi-Fi stands for Wi-Fi (wireless local area networking based on IEEE 802.11), a telecom abbreviation.
Wireless networking technology that connects phones, laptops, TVs and smart devices to a local network and the internet through a router or access point, using the 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz bands.
Example: What's the Wi-Fi password? My phone keeps dropping to cellular data.
Usage notes
Wi-Fi is a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance, which certifies devices; branding firm Interbrand coined the name in 1999 as a play on "hi-fi". Despite popular belief, it does not stand for "wireless fidelity", though that phrase briefly appeared in early marketing. The underlying IEEE 802.11 standard dates from 1997. In 2018 the Wi-Fi Alliance introduced generation numbers, such as Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7.
