UWB stands for Ultra-wideband, a telecom abbreviation.
Short-range radio technology that sends very short pulses across a wide frequency range, allowing devices to measure distance and direction to within centimeters. It powers precision item finding, digital car keys and device-to-device positioning.
Example: With UWB, the phone points an arrow straight to the AirTag in the sofa cushions.
Usage notes
The FCC authorized unlicensed UWB from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz in 2002. Apple added a UWB chip to the iPhone 11 in 2019, and Samsung and Google followed in high-end phones. The Car Connectivity Consortium's Digital Key standard uses UWB so cars unlock only when the phone is truly nearby, resisting relay attacks. IEEE 802.15.4z defines the secure ranging methods.
