WEA stands for Wireless Emergency Alerts, a telecom abbreviation also used in government.
US public-alert system that broadcasts urgent messages, such as AMBER alerts, extreme weather warnings and national alerts, to all compatible phones in an affected area, with a distinctive loud tone.
Example: Every phone in the office blared at once with a flash-flood WEA.
Usage notes
WEA launched in 2012 and is managed by FEMA through its Integrated Public Alert and Warning System. The first national test of presidential alerts took place on October 3, 2018. Alerts use cell broadcast, so they are not slowed by network congestion. Similar systems include EU-Alert across Europe and the UK's Emergency Alerts, first tested nationally in 2023.
