WCDMA stands for Wideband code-division multiple access, a telecom abbreviation.
Air-interface technology of UMTS 3G networks, using 5 MHz-wide channels shared by many users through spreading codes. Phone specifications list supported WCDMA bands.
Example: The phone supports WCDMA bands 1 and 8, so it works on most 3G networks in Europe and Asia.
Usage notes
NTT Docomo launched the first commercial W-CDMA service in 2001. WCDMA evolved into HSPA and HSPA+, which multiplied data speeds. Despite the similar name, it is not compatible with the CDMA2000 networks of Verizon and Sprint. Many operators have now switched off WCDMA to free spectrum for 4G and 5G.
