VoLTE stands for Voice over LTE, a telecom abbreviation.
Technology that carries phone calls as data over a 4G LTE network, using the IP Multimedia Subsystem, instead of switching to older 2G or 3G networks. It enables HD Voice audio quality and simultaneous calls and data.
Example: After the 3G shutdown, your phone needs VoLTE turned on to make calls at all.
Usage notes
Carriers including SK Telecom, LG U+ and MetroPCS launched VoLTE in 2012. HD Voice uses wideband codecs such as AMR-WB and EVS, roughly doubling the audio frequency range of traditional calls. VoLTE generally sets up calls faster. Imported or older phones that are not certified for a carrier's VoLTE may be unable to make calls once 3G is switched off.
