VoNR stands for Voice over New Radio, a telecom abbreviation.
Technology that carries phone calls directly over a 5G standalone network, rather than dropping back to 4G VoLTE when a call starts. It allows faster call setup and keeps the phone on 5G throughout.
Example: With VoNR enabled, the phone stays on 5G during calls instead of switching to LTE.
Usage notes
Before VoNR, phones on 5G standalone networks used "EPS fallback", moving calls to LTE. Carriers began launching VoNR around 2021 and 2022, including T-Mobile in the United States in 2022. Like VoLTE, it relies on the IP Multimedia Subsystem. Users rarely notice a difference in sound quality.
