LTE stands for Long Term Evolution, a telecom abbreviation.
Fourth-generation mobile broadband standard developed by 3GPP that delivers high-speed data over an all-IP network, the technology behind most "4G" service worldwide. Phones show "LTE" or "4G" when connected to it.
Example: My phone switched from 5G to LTE in the subway, but videos still loaded fine.
Usage notes
LTE was specified in 3GPP Release 8 in 2008, and TeliaSonera launched the first commercial network in Stockholm and Oslo in December 2009. It uses OFDMA for downloads and SC-FDMA for uploads to save battery. Because LTE has no traditional circuit-switched voice, calls use VoLTE or fall back to 2G and 3G. The "long term" name reflected its role as a path toward future generations.
