CategoriesMedical

TnI stands for Troponin I, a cardiology abbreviation.

Cardiac-specific protein released into the blood when heart muscle cells are damaged, the most widely used test for diagnosing myocardial infarction. Levels begin rising within hours of injury and can stay elevated for 7 to 10 days.

Example: TnI 0.03 at arrival and 2.4 at 3 hours with new ST depression: NSTEMI.

Usage notes

Many manufacturers produce troponin I assays and results are not interchangeable, so serial values should come from the same lab. Elevated troponin is not specific to heart attack: myocarditis, pulmonary embolism, sepsis, kidney failure and strenuous exercise also raise it. Units vary between ng/mL for older assays and ng/L for high-sensitivity tests.
