Amount of heat, in watts, that a processor or graphics chip is designed to produce under a sustained typical heavy load, used to size coolers and power delivery. Laptop processors range from under 15 W to over 55 W, while desktop chips commonly sit between 65 and 170 W.
Example: A 65 W TDP chip will run fine with the stock cooler, but the 125 W model needs a tower cooler.
TDP is not the maximum power draw: chips routinely exceed it while boosting. Intel replaced the term from its 12th Gen processors in 2021 with "Processor Base Power" and "Maximum Turbo Power", and AMD's sockets enforce a separate limit called PPT. Because each vendor defines TDP differently, comparing figures across brands is unreliable.
2. Torsades de pointes (twisting of the points) (TdP)

Polymorphic ventricular tachycardia associated with a prolonged QT interval, in which the QRS complexes appear to twist around the baseline. Episodes often stop on their own but can degenerate into ventricular fibrillation.
Example: Runs of TdP after IV haloperidol with QTc 560; magnesium 2 g IV given and drug stopped.
The French name was coined by François Dessertenne in 1966. Intravenous magnesium sulfate is first-line regardless of the serum magnesium level, and overdrive pacing or isoproterenol may be used for recurrences. Common culprits include certain antiarrhythmics, antipsychotics, macrolide and fluoroquinolone antibiotics, methadone, and low potassium or magnesium.
