TEVAR stands for Thoracic endovascular aortic repair, a cardiology abbreviation.
Placement of a stent graft in the thoracic aorta through the femoral artery to treat descending thoracic aneurysms, type B aortic dissections, traumatic aortic injury and penetrating ulcers. It has largely replaced open surgery for many descending aortic conditions.
Example: Complicated type B dissection with malperfusion: emergent TEVAR covering the primary entry tear.
Usage notes
Covering the left subclavian artery origin may require a bypass or branched device to protect blood flow to the arm and brain. Spinal cord ischemia causing paralysis is a feared complication, reduced by maintaining blood pressure and draining spinal fluid. Type A dissections, involving the ascending aorta, still require open surgery.
