1. Trinitrotoluene
Science & Engineering · Chemistry Abbreviations
Yellow solid explosive, C7H5N3O6, prized because it is relatively insensitive to shock and can be melted and poured safely into shells. TNT has been a standard military explosive since the early 20th century, and its energy is the yardstick for describing large explosions in kilotons and megatons.
Example: The Hiroshima bomb released energy equivalent to about 15 kilotons of TNT.
German chemist Julius Wilbrand first prepared TNT in 1863 as a yellow dye. One ton of TNT equivalent is defined as 4.184 gigajoules. TNT is not the same as dynamite, which is based on nitroglycerin absorbed in a filler, although cartoons often confuse the two.
2. Turner Network Television
Organizations & Companies · Media and Broadcasting Abbreviations
American cable network showing dramas, movies and live sports, long home of the award-winning NBA studio show Inside the NBA. Owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.
Example: Inside the NBA aired on TNT for more than three decades.
Launched by Ted Turner on October 3, 1988, with Gone with the Wind. TNT's NBA rights ended after the 2024-25 season, when the league signed new deals with NBC and Amazon; Inside the NBA moved to ESPN under a licensing deal. TNT Sports remains a major sports brand.
3. Troponin T (TnT)
Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations
Cardiac troponin subunit measured as a blood marker of heart muscle injury, mainly with high-sensitivity assays from a single manufacturer. It is used to diagnose myocardial infarction and to estimate risk in heart failure, pulmonary embolism and kidney disease.
Example: hs-TnT 52 ng/L with a delta of 24 at 1 hour; cardiology consulted for NSTEMI.
Troponin T is mildly elevated in chronic kidney disease and some skeletal muscle disorders more often than troponin I. Because one company makes the assay, values are more standardized across labs than troponin I results. Troponin C, the third subunit, is shared with skeletal muscle and has no diagnostic role.
