TEER stands for Transcatheter edge-to-edge repair, a cardiology abbreviation.

Catheter-based procedure that clips together the mitral or tricuspid valve leaflets to reduce regurgitation, delivered through a vein in the groin and across the atrial septum. It is used for patients with severe regurgitation who are at high risk for surgery.

Example: Mitral TEER with two clips reduced MR from severe to mild; home on day 1.

Usage notes

Mitral TEER is best known by the MitraClip device, approved by the FDA in 2013 for primary MR and in 2019 for secondary MR after the COAPT trial showed fewer deaths and hospitalizations in heart failure patients. The technique is modeled on the surgical Alfieri stitch, which sews the leaflets together. A tricuspid clip system was approved in 2024.
