TEE stands for Transesophageal echocardiogram, a cardiology abbreviation.

Echocardiogram performed with a probe passed through the mouth into the esophagus, directly behind the heart, giving much clearer images of the valves, left atrium and aorta than a chest-wall study. It requires fasting and sedation.

Example: TEE prior to cardioversion: no left atrial appendage thrombus; proceed with DCCV.

Usage notes

Common uses are detecting endocarditis vegetations, excluding left atrial appendage clot before cardioversion or ablation, evaluating prosthetic valves and guiding structural procedures such as TEER and appendage occlusion. It is also used in the operating room during heart surgery. Complications are rare but include sore throat and, very rarely, esophageal injury.
