TTE stands for Transthoracic echocardiogram, a cardiology abbreviation.

Standard echocardiogram performed by placing an ultrasound probe on the chest wall, typically taking 30 to 60 minutes. It is the first-line test for heart failure, murmurs, suspected valve disease, cardiomyopathy and pericardial effusion.

Example: TTE: normal biventricular size and function, no significant valvular disease, EF 60 to 65%.

Usage notes

Image quality can be limited by obesity, lung disease or chest wall shape, in which case an ultrasound enhancing agent or a TEE may be used. TTE is noninvasive and needs no preparation or sedation. Reports typically include ejection fraction, chamber dimensions, valve gradients and an estimate of pulmonary artery pressure.
