1. Türkiye

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Türkiye, formerly Turkey in English, registered the new name with the United Nations in 2022. Ankara is the capital and TUR the alpha-3 code, the lira trades as TRY, and Istanbul straddles Europe and Asia.

Example: Turkish IBANs begin with TR and contain 26 characters.

The language code is also tr, as in tr-TR; Turkish locale handling of the dotted and dotless i is a classic software bug. Sports bodies use TUR.

2. Tricuspid regurgitation

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Backflow of blood through the tricuspid valve into the right atrium during systole. Trace or mild TR is seen in most healthy people, while significant TR usually results from right ventricular dilation due to pulmonary hypertension, left heart disease, atrial fibrillation or pacemaker leads.

Example: Severe functional TR with dilated annulus, RVSP 55 mmHg and ascites; diuresis and heart team review.

Echocardiographers estimate pulmonary artery systolic pressure from the TR jet velocity using the simplified Bernoulli equation. Severe TR causes jugular venous distension with large v waves, a pulsatile liver, leg edema and ascites. Transcatheter tricuspid repair and replacement devices received FDA approval in 2024, expanding options for patients at high surgical risk.

3. Ton of refrigeration

Units & Measurements · Engineering Unit Abbreviations

Cooling capacity equal to 12,000 BTU per hour, about 3.52 kW, used to size air conditioners and chillers in the US, India and elsewhere. A typical American home needs a 2- to 5-ton central air system.

Example: The building's two chillers provide a combined 800 TR of cooling.

The unit dates from the ice trade: one ton of refrigeration is the heat absorbed by melting one short ton of ice over 24 hours. Contractors usually just say "tons", as in a 3-ton AC unit, which has nothing to do with the unit's weight. Also written RT.

4. Trace (tr)

Units & Measurements · Math Abbreviations

The sum of the diagonal entries of a square matrix, written tr A. It equals the sum of the matrix's eigenvalues and does not change under a change of basis.

Example: For the matrix with rows (2, 1) and (0, 5), tr A = 7.

The trace satisfies tr(AB) = tr(BA), a property used throughout physics and statistics. In quantum mechanics, expectation values are computed as traces involving density matrices. Some texts write Tr, and German sources Sp, from Spur.

5. Tuesday and Thursday

Units & Measurements · Day of the Week Abbreviations

Registrar code for a class meeting on Tuesday (T) and Thursday (R), used by universities whose scheduling systems assign one letter per weekday. It is equivalent to TTh on other campuses.

Example: MATH 241 TR 2:00 to 3:15 p.m., Engineering Hall 120.

The R-for-Thursday convention appears in many US course catalogs alongside MTWRF for weekday sections. Outside schedules, TR is the country code for Turkey and, in HVAC engineering, a ton of refrigeration.

6. Transcript (Tr.)

Law & Legal · Litigation Abbreviations

Citation abbreviation for a court reporter's verbatim transcript of a hearing or trial, followed by page and line numbers, as in "Tr. 112:4-9". Appellate briefs rely heavily on transcript citations to show what was said below.

Example: The witness conceded the brakes were inspected that morning. Tr. 214:3-12.

The Bluebook's Bluepages list "Tr." for transcript, and practitioners distinguish hearing transcripts ("Hr'g Tr.") from trial transcripts ("Trial Tr."); deposition transcripts are cited "Dep." Transcripts are ordered and paid for through the official court reporter, and redaction rules protect personal identifiers.

7. Transpose (tr)

Writing & Everyday · Proofreading and Correction Mark Abbreviations

Instructs that the order of letters, words or lines be swapped, shown by a curved line looping around the elements to be exchanged. It is one of the most frequently used proofreading marks.

Example: In "teh results," the proofreader looped the e and h and wrote tr to correct the typo.

The transposition sign is an S-shaped curve drawn over one element and under the other. British Standard BS 5261 and the Chicago Manual of Style both include it in their tables of marks. Spell-checkers catch transposed letters only when the result is not a real word, so "form" typed for "from" slips through.

8. Textus Receptus

Religion · Religious Term Abbreviations

Family of printed Greek New Testament editions beginning with Erasmus in 1516 and including Stephanus (1550) and Beza, which underlie the King James Version. The name, "received text", comes from the preface of the 1633 Elzevir edition.

Example: KJV-only advocates defend the TR against modern critical editions.

The TR was based on a relatively small number of late Byzantine manuscripts. Modern editions such as NA28 draw on older papyri and codices. The NKJV also follows the TR.
