1. Search engine marketing
Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations
Marketing that promotes a website through search engines, today used mostly to mean paid search advertising such as Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising, where advertisers bid on keywords to appear above or beside organic results.
Example: Our SEM budget is concentrated on high-intent keywords like "emergency plumber near me."
In the early 2000s SEM was an umbrella term covering both SEO and paid search; over time the industry narrowed it to paid listings, and many people now treat it as a synonym for PPC search. European marketers often say SEA (search engine advertising) for the paid side.
2. Standard error of the mean
Units & Measurements · Statistics Abbreviations · also used in medicine
How much a sample mean would vary across repeated samples, estimated as the sample SD divided by the square root of the sample size. Biology and psychology papers often draw error bars as mean ± SEM.
Example: Data are shown as mean ± SEM from three independent experiments.
SEM error bars are much narrower than SD bars, and critics note that authors sometimes choose them to make variability look smaller; many journals now require figures to state which was plotted. With only three replicates, mean ± SEM covers far less than a 95 percent confidence interval. SEM also abbreviates structural equation modeling.
3. Scanning electron microscope
Science & Engineering · Physics Abbreviations
Microscope that scans a focused electron beam across a sample and builds an image from emitted electrons, revealing surface texture in striking 3D-looking detail at magnifications up to hundreds of thousands of times. SEMs are used in materials science, failure analysis, forensics and biology.
Example: SEM images of the fracture surface showed fatigue striations that began at a corrosion pit.
Manfred von Ardenne built an early scanning electron microscope in 1937, and the first commercial instrument, the Cambridge Scientific Instrument Company's Stereoscan, appeared in 1965. Non-conductive samples are usually coated with a thin layer of gold or carbon. In statistics and psychology SEM means structural equation modeling.
4. Systolic ejection murmur
Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations
Crescendo-decrescendo murmur that begins after the first heart sound and ends before the second, produced by blood flowing across the aortic or pulmonary valve or outflow tract. Causes range from harmless flow murmurs in children and pregnancy to aortic stenosis and HOCM.
Example: Grade 2/6 SEM at the left upper sternal border, no radiation; likely innocent flow murmur.
Innocent murmurs are typically soft (grade 1 or 2), systolic, vary with position and come without symptoms or other abnormal sounds. Radiation to the carotid arteries suggests aortic stenosis, and a murmur that increases with Valsalva or standing suggests HOCM. Echocardiography is advised for loud, diastolic or symptomatic murmurs.
5. Structural equation modeling
Science & Engineering · Psychology Abbreviations · also used in measurement
Statistical method that estimates networks of relationships among observed and latent variables at once, combining factor analysis with path analysis. Psychologists and social scientists use SEM to test theories such as whether stress affects health through sleep.
Example: SEM indicated that the effect of income on well-being was largely mediated by perceived stress.
Geneticist Sewall Wright developed path analysis in the 1920s, and Karl Jöreskog's LISREL software in the 1970s made SEM practical. Popular tools today include Mplus and the R package lavaan. A well-fitting model is consistent with the data but does not by itself prove causation. In microscopy SEM means scanning electron microscope.
