1. Recreational vehicle

Transportation & Travel · Driving Abbreviations

Motor vehicle or trailer with living quarters for camping and travel, including motorhomes and towable travel trailers and fifth-wheels. About 11 million US households own an RV.

Example: We're renting an RV for two weeks to see Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons.

Motorhomes are classed as Class A (bus-sized), Class B (camper vans) and Class C (built on a truck chassis with an over-cab bunk). Most Class A and C motorhomes can be driven with an ordinary license, though some states require special licenses for the largest. RV parks offer hookups for water, power and sewage.

2. Right ventricle

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Lower chamber on the right side of the heart that pumps deoxygenated blood through the pulmonary valve into the lungs. It is crescent-shaped and thin-walled, adapted to the low-pressure pulmonary circulation, and fails readily when pressure in the lungs rises suddenly.

Example: CT angiogram shows an RV/LV ratio of 1.4, consistent with right heart strain from PE.

An RV-to-LV diameter ratio above about 1.0 on CT or echo marks right ventricular strain in pulmonary embolism and identifies higher-risk patients. Right ventricular infarction, usually accompanying an inferior heart attack, makes patients dependent on preload, so nitrates can cause dangerous hypotension. In pulmonary function testing RV means residual volume.

3. Rotavirus vaccine

Medical · Pediatric & Neonatal Abbreviations

Oral vaccine that protects infants against rotavirus, once the leading cause of severe diarrhea and dehydration in young children. Two products are used: RV5, given in three doses, and RV1, given in two doses, starting by 15 weeks of age.

Example: RV5 dose 2 given orally at 4 months; tolerated well.

The first rotavirus vaccine, RotaShield, was withdrawn in 1999 because of intussusception, a bowel blockage; current vaccines carry a much smaller risk and huge benefits. The series must be completed by 8 months of age. In cardiology RV means right ventricle, and in pulmonology residual volume.

4. Residual volume

Medical · Respiratory Abbreviations

Air remaining in the lungs after a complete forced exhalation, which cannot be blown out and keeps the airways and alveoli from collapsing. It is about 1 to 1.5 liters in healthy adults and is measured as part of lung volume testing.

Example: RV 210% predicted with RV/TLC ratio 0.62, indicating marked air trapping.

An increased residual volume and RV/TLC ratio signal air trapping, as in emphysema, asthma and bronchiolitis. Bronchoscopic lung volume reduction with endobronchial valves targets patients with severe hyperinflation. Because it cannot be exhaled, RV is measured indirectly by plethysmography or gas dilution. In cardiology RV means right ventricle.

5. Registered voters

Government & Politics · Political Abbreviations

Poll subgroup consisting of respondents who say they are registered to vote, labeled "RV" in poll tables. Results among registered voters are commonly reported earlier in a campaign, before pollsters apply likely-voter screens.

Example: Among RV, the incumbent leads by 3 points; among likely voters the race is tied.

In recent presidential elections more than 70 percent of voting-age citizens have reported being registered, so registered-voter samples exclude a sizable group of adults. Comparisons across polls should check whether each surveyed adults (A), registered voters or likely voters. RV more commonly means recreational vehicle.

6. Random variable

Units & Measurements · Statistics Abbreviations

A variable whose value is a numerical outcome of a random process, such as the number of heads in ten coin flips. Random variables are described by their distributions, expected values and variances.

Example: Let the RV X denote the number of defective items in a batch of 50.

Also written r.v. Random variables are usually denoted by capital letters (X, Y) and their observed values by lowercase letters (x, y). Discrete ones have a probability mass function and continuous ones a density. Formally, a random variable is a measurable function on a probability space.

7. Research vessel

Transportation & Travel · Maritime Abbreviations

Prefix for ships used for scientific research, such as oceanography, fisheries surveys or seabed mapping, as in RV Atlantis. Also written R/V.

Example: RV Falkor (too) mapped thousands of square kilometers of uncharted seafloor off South America.

Research ships are operated by universities, government agencies and foundations, often carrying submersibles and remote-operated vehicles. The US academic fleet is coordinated through UNOLS. On roads, RV means recreational vehicle, a completely different meaning.

8. Revised Version

Religion · Religious Term Abbreviations

British revision of the King James Version, with the New Testament published in 1881 and the Old Testament in 1885, the first officially authorized revision of the KJV in England. It drew on older Greek manuscripts discovered since 1611.

Example: The vicar compared the KJV and RV readings of the Lord's Prayer.

Greek scholars B. F. Westcott and F. J. A. Hort were influential members of the revision committee. The American Standard Version of 1901 is its American counterpart. RV also abbreviates recreational vehicle.
