1. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport
Transportation & Travel · Airport Code Abbreviations
Primary airport of the Pacific Northwest, located between Seattle and Tacoma and widely called "Sea-Tac." It is the main hub of Alaska Airlines and a transpacific hub for Delta.
Example: Flight lands at SEA at 9:40; I'll take Link light rail downtown and meet you at Westlake.
ICAO code KSEA. Built by the Port of Seattle during World War II and opened to commercial service in 1947. Its third runway, opened in 2008, required enormous amounts of fill dirt and years of legal fights. The surrounding city incorporated in 1990 and named itself SeaTac after the airport.
2. Southeast Asia
Geography & Places · Region Abbreviations
Abbreviation for Southeast Asia, the region of 11 countries from Myanmar to the Philippines and Indonesia, common in business, gaming servers and travel writing.
Example: The esports league added a SEA division for teams from Indonesia and the Philippines.
All 11 Southeast Asian countries are now ASEAN members after Timor-Leste joined in 2025. SEA is also the airport code for Seattle–Tacoma International.
3. Search engine advertising
Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations
Paid text and shopping ads displayed on search engine results pages, bought through platforms such as Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising on a pay-per-click basis. The term is common in European, especially German and Dutch, marketing usage.
Example: The SEA team doubled bids on brand keywords during the sale weekend.
English-speaking markets more often say "paid search," "PPC" or "SEM" for the same activity. In SEA, ad position depends on the bid and on quality signals such as expected click-through rate and landing page experience, not on bid alone.
4. State educational agency
Education & Academia · K-12 Education Abbreviations
Federal legal term for the state agency responsible for supervising public elementary and secondary schools, usually the state department of education. SEAs distribute federal funds, run state tests and hold districts accountable.
Example: The SEA released new graduation guidance after the legislature changed testing requirements.
Each state's SEA submits an accountability plan to the US Department of Education under the Every Student Succeeds Act. SEAs also license teachers in most states. In everyday use, the agency is called the department of education or office of public instruction.
