1. Pay-per-click
Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations
Online advertising model in which the advertiser pays each time a user clicks an ad, rather than for impressions. It dominates search advertising and is widely used on shopping and social platforms; the term also serves as shorthand for paid search work generally.
Example: Our PPC campaigns drive about a third of new leads, at an average cost of $3.80 per click.
The model was pioneered by GoTo.com, later Overture, in 1998. Google's AdWords, launched in 2000, adopted cost-per-click pricing in 2002 and grew into the largest PPC platform; it was renamed Google Ads in 2018. Click fraud, invalid clicks generated by bots or competitors, is a long-standing PPC problem that platforms filter and partially refund.
2. Public Protection Classification
Government & Politics · Emergency Services Abbreviations
Rating from 1 to 10 assigned to fire departments by ISO, a Verisk business, measuring a community's fire protection based on fire department resources, water supply and emergency communications. Class 1 is the best.
Example: Our town improved from PPC 5 to 3, which lowered homeowners' insurance premiums.
Many insurers use PPC ratings in pricing property insurance. Often called an "ISO rating." Rural areas without hydrants typically have higher (worse) classes. In online marketing, PPC means pay-per-click.
