1. Soapsuds enema

Cleansing enema of warm water mixed with a small amount of mild castile soap, given to clear the lower bowel before procedures or for constipation. Soap irritates the bowel lining and stimulates peristalsis.
Example: SSE given 1000 mL, large brown soft BM returned.
Only mild castile soap is used, since harsh soaps can damage the rectal mucosa. Large-volume enemas are given with the patient lying on the left side. Some facilities have stopped stocking soapsuds enemas in favor of prepackaged sodium phosphate or mineral oil enemas.
2. South-southeast
Geography & Places · Direction Abbreviations
Halfway between south and southeast, at 157.5 degrees, SSE appears in weather observations, marine forecasts and sailing directions, written in capitals without periods.
Example: Light SSE breeze, 5 knots, seas 1 to 2 feet.
Aviation weather reports (METARs) give wind in degrees, so an SSE wind appears as about 160.
3. Sum of squared errors

The total of the squared differences between observed values and model predictions, also called the residual or error sum of squares. Least-squares regression chooses the coefficients that make SSE as small as possible.
Example: Adding the interaction term reduced SSE from 540 to 410.
SSE divided by its degrees of freedom gives the mean squared error that estimates the error variance. Textbooks disagree on labels: many call the explained part SSR (regression) and the unexplained part SSE, while others use SSR for the residual sum. Check the definitions before comparing formulas.
4. Server-sent events

A browser API that keeps an HTTP connection open so the server can push a stream of text events to the page, such as live scores, notifications or chatbot replies arriving word by word. Data flows one way, from server to client.
Example: The chatbot streams its answer over SSE, so words appear as they are generated.
Part of the HTML Living Standard and used in JavaScript through the EventSource interface, with the content type text/event-stream. SSE is simpler than WebSockets and reconnects automatically, but the client cannot send data back on the same channel. In cloud storage SSE means server-side encryption; the streaming meaning appears in front-end and API documentation.
5. Server-side encryption

Encryption that a cloud storage service applies automatically when writing data to disk and removes when authorized users read it, protecting stored data without application changes. Amazon S3, Azure Storage and Google Cloud Storage use it.
Example: The bucket policy requires SSE with a customer-managed KMS key for every upload.
AWS options include SSE-S3 with Amazon-managed keys, SSE-KMS and SSE-C with customer-supplied keys, and since January 2023 S3 encrypts all new objects by default. It does not protect against someone who already has valid access, so client-side encryption is used for higher assurance. In web development SSE means server-sent events.
