1. Specialist
Military · US Army Rank Abbreviations
Army enlisted rank at pay grade E-4 and one of the most populous grades in the service. A SPC wears an eagle on a shield-shaped insignia and, unlike a corporal of the same pay grade, is not a noncommissioned officer, so the rank carries technical responsibility without formal NCO authority.
Example: SPC Okafor will drive the lead vehicle and handle radio checks on the convoy.
Soldiers nicknamed the insignia the "sham shield," and long-serving specialists joke about belonging to the "E-4 Mafia." The current rank dates from 1985, when the Army renamed the old SP4 grade and abolished SP5 and SP6. AP style writes Spc. Do not confuse it with the Space Force grades Spc1 through Spc4.
2. Single-point cane
Medical · Rehabilitation Abbreviations
Standard cane with one tip, used for mild balance problems or to offload a painful leg. It is held in the hand opposite the affected leg.
Example: Gait with SPC in L hand, independent on level surfaces, SBA on stairs.
Correct height places the handle at the wrist crease with the arm hanging. Holding the cane on the strong side reduces load on the weak hip by shifting the center of gravity. In urology SPC means suprapubic catheter.
3. Suprapubic catheter
Medical · Nephrology & Urology Abbreviations
Urinary catheter inserted through the lower abdominal wall directly into the bladder, used for long-term drainage when a urethral catheter is unsuitable. Indications include urethral strictures, trauma, neurogenic bladder and patient comfort.
Example: SPC change due today, 16 Fr; tract healthy without granulation.
Compared with long-term urethral catheters, an SPC avoids urethral erosion and can make sexual activity easier. The first change is often done by a urologist, after which trained nurses or caregivers replace it every 4–12 weeks. Also called a suprapubic cystostomy.
4. Statistical process control
Science & Engineering · Engineering Abbreviations · also used in measurement and business
Use of statistical methods, especially control charts, to monitor a manufacturing process and detect when variation exceeds what is normal, so problems are corrected before defective parts are made. SPC distinguishes common-cause variation from special causes that need action.
Example: SPC charts showed the bore diameter drifting toward the upper limit as the tool wore.
Walter Shewhart introduced the control chart at Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1924, and W. Edwards Deming spread SPC in Japan after 1950. Control limits are typically set at three standard deviations from the mean. SPC underpins quality approaches such as Six Sigma.
5. Space (Spc)
Geography & Places · Address Abbreviations
Space number in a mobile home park or RV park, where each lot is called a space, as in 1500 Desert Rd Spc 34.
Example: The mobile home is at 900 Palm Dr Spc 112.
SPC is standard, and Lot is used the same way in some parks; both are accepted secondary designators.
6. Supplementary protection certificate
Law & Legal · Intellectual Property Abbreviations
Right available in the EU, the UK and some other countries that extends protection for a patented medicine or plant protection product by up to five years, compensating for time lost obtaining marketing authorization. It takes effect when the basic patent expires.
Example: The originator's SPC keeps generic versions off the European market until 2029.
Introduced for medicines in 1992. An extra six months is available for completing an agreed pediatric investigation plan. A 2019 manufacturing waiver lets EU generic makers produce during the SPC term for export, or for stockpiling shortly before expiry. The US counterpart is patent term extension.
