1. Simple random sample
Units & Measurements · Statistics Abbreviations
A sample in which every possible group of n units has the same chance of being chosen, the basic design behind much of statistical inference. Random numbers applied to a complete list produce an SRS.
Example: The auditor drew an SRS of 200 invoices from the year's 12,000 records.
An SRS needs a complete sampling frame, which is often impractical, so large surveys use stratified, cluster or systematic designs and adjust their formulas. Many textbook formulas, such as the standard error of a mean, assume an SRS. Drawing names from a hat is the classic classroom illustration.
2. Supplemental restraint system
Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations
Airbag system, so called because airbags supplement rather than replace seat belts. An SRS or airbag warning light on the dashboard means the airbags may not deploy in a crash.
Example: The SRS light stayed on after the seat was removed, so the airbag module needs a reset.
SRS labels appear on steering wheels, dashboards and pillars where airbags are hidden. US law required frontal airbags for drivers and passengers in all new cars from the 1998 model year. The Takata recall, involving tens of millions of inflators that could explode and spray metal fragments, became the largest automotive recall in US history.
3. Stereotactic radiosurgery
Medical · Neurology Abbreviations
Delivery of a single or few very precise, high doses of radiation to a small target, using imaging and immobilization to spare surrounding brain. It treats brain metastases, arteriovenous malformations, vestibular schwannomas, meningiomas and trigeminal neuralgia without an incision.
Example: Three brain metastases, largest 1.8 cm: SRS rather than whole-brain radiation to preserve cognition.
Swedish neurosurgeon Lars Leksell conceived radiosurgery in 1951, and the first Gamma Knife was used in 1967 at the Karolinska Institute. CyberKnife and modified linear accelerators are alternative platforms. For limited brain metastases, SRS largely replaced whole-brain radiation because it causes less cognitive decline. Despite the name, no surgery is performed.
4. Serious (tone indicator) (/srs)
Texting & Internet Slang · Social Media Abbreviations
Tone tag signaling that a message is meant seriously, often used after a run of jokes so that a sincere statement or request is not dismissed.
Example: I really need help with this, my landlord won't fix the heat /srs
Used in communities where sarcasm and jokes are common, especially on Discord and Tumblr. It complements /j (joking) and /s (sarcasm). The related "srs" without a slash also means "serious" or "seriously" in chat.
5. Software requirements specification
Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations
A document describing what a software system must do and the constraints it must meet, including functional requirements, performance targets, interfaces and design limitations. It serves as an agreement between clients and developers.
Example: Section 3.2 of the SRS requires the report to load in under two seconds.
IEEE 830-1998 was the classic template, later superseded by ISO/IEC/IEEE 29148. Formal specifications remain common in government, defense, medical devices and outsourced projects, while agile teams usually rely on user stories and backlogs. Requirements are written as "shall" statements to make them testable.
