1. Southern Baptist Convention

Religion · Religious Term Abbreviations

Largest Protestant denomination in the United States, founded in Augusta, Georgia, in 1845 after a split with northern Baptists over slavery. Its roughly 13 million members belong to independent churches that cooperate in missions and seminaries.

Example: Delegates to the SBC annual meeting vote on resolutions and elect a president.

In 1995 the convention formally apologized for its historic support of slavery and racism. Membership peaked at more than 16 million in 2006. Its Cooperative Program funds the International Mission Board and six seminaries.

2. Summary of benefits and coverage

Medical · Health Insurance Abbreviations

Standardized document, required by the Affordable Care Act, that summarizes a health plan's costs and coverage in a uniform format so consumers can compare plans side by side. It lists deductibles, copays, out-of-pocket limits, covered services and coverage examples.

Example: Compare the SBCs: Plan A's deductible is lower but specialist visits cost more.

Each SBC ends with coverage examples estimating costs for having a baby, managing type 2 diabetes and treating a simple fracture. Insurers and employers must provide it at application, enrollment and renewal, and it is limited to a few pages. A companion uniform glossary defines common insurance terms.

3. Single-board computer

Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations

Complete computer built on one circuit board, with processor, memory, storage interface and input/output, used for hobby projects, education, robotics, media centers and industrial control. The Raspberry Pi is the best-known example.

Example: The weather station runs on an SBC that posts readings to a website every minute.

The Raspberry Pi launched in 2012 at 35 dollars to teach programming; its maker, Raspberry Pi Holdings, listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2024. Other SBCs include the BeagleBone, Orange Pi and NVIDIA Jetson boards for AI. Arduino boards are microcontrollers rather than SBCs, because they run a single program without an operating system. In audio, SBC is a Bluetooth codec.

4. Subband codec

Technology & Computing · Consumer Electronics Abbreviations

Mandatory baseline audio codec for Bluetooth stereo headphones and speakers, supported by every A2DP device. Its quality is adequate at high bit rates but generally below AAC, aptX or LDAC.

Example: The cheap headphones only support SBC, so the music sounds a little flat over Bluetooth.

SBC (low-complexity subband coding) was designed to be computationally light for early Bluetooth chips. Its maximum standard bit rate is about 345 kbit/s, though many devices use less. When a phone and headphones share no better codec, they fall back to SBC. In computing, SBC means single-board computer.
