1. Royal Air Force

Military · Military Unit and Organization Abbreviations

Air and space force of the United Kingdom, operating Typhoon and F-35 fighters, transport and tanker aircraft, surveillance aircraft and helicopters. It was the world's first independent air force.

Example: The RAF scrambled Typhoons to intercept Russian bombers approaching UK airspace.

Formed on 1 April 1918 by merging the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. The RAF's victory in the 1940 Battle of Britain is central to British national memory. Pronounced as letters or, informally, "raff."

2. Risk adjustment factor

Medical · Health Insurance Abbreviations

Numerical risk score for a health plan member, calculated from demographics and documented diagnoses, that scales capitated payments to the expected cost of care. A RAF of 1.0 represents average expected cost, and sicker members score higher.

Example: Panel RAF rose to 1.24 after better documentation of chronic conditions.

Medicare Advantage, ACA marketplace risk adjustment and many value-based contracts rely on RAF scores. Because accurate, complete documentation affects payment, audits recover overpayments when records do not support submitted codes. Also called a risk score.
