SHOP stands for Small Business Health Options Program, a health insurance abbreviation.
ACA marketplace for small employers, generally those with 1 to 50 employees (up to 100 in some states), to offer qualified health plans to their workers. Employers buying through SHOP may qualify for the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit.
Example: To claim the tax credit, the bakery bought coverage through SHOP.
Usage notes
The credit is available for two consecutive years to employers with fewer than 25 full-time-equivalent employees and below-threshold average wages that pay at least half of premiums. Uptake has been low, and the federal SHOP now operates mainly through brokers and insurers.
